Riviera Maya Yacht Charter Guide 2026: PDC, Tulum & Cozumel
The complete guide to private yacht charters along the Riviera Maya — which marina to depart from, what each destination offers, prices, and what’s actually included.
The Riviera Maya stretches 130 km from Cancún in the north to Tulum in the south, with Playa del Carmen roughly in the center. The entire coastline sits on the Caribbean side of the Yucatán Peninsula — protected from Atlantic swells, calm year-round, and warm enough to swim every month of the year.
A private yacht charter in this region is not just a boat ride. Depending on where you depart from, you can access wild sea turtles, one of the world’s best barrier reefs, secluded beaches with no road access, and — in season — whale sharks in open water. This guide breaks down the options by departure point.
Riviera Maya Charter Prices at a Glance
| Departure | Half-Day (4h) | Full-Day (8h) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playa del Carmen | From $1,550 | From $2,800 | Sea turtles (Akumal), reef, beach |
| Cozumel | From $480 | From $850 | Palancar Reef, El Cielo stingrays |
| Tulum | From $1,550 | From $2,800 | Cenote coastline, secluded beaches |
| Cancún | From $1,100 | From $1,900 | Isla Mujeres, whale sharks (Jun–Sep) |
All prices include captain, fuel, and snorkel gear. Prices are for the entire vessel — not per person. Groups up to 10 guests on speedboats; up to 20 on catamarans.
Playa del Carmen: Sea Turtles + Reef Corridor
PDC is the most versatile departure point on the Riviera Maya. Within 30 km south of the PDC marina lies Akumal Bay, one of the most reliable wild sea turtle encounters in the entire Caribbean. Loggerhead and green turtles feed on the seagrass beds year-round in 3–5 meters of clear water. A 7 AM departure gives your group a session with 10–20 turtles before the shared snorkel tour boats arrive.
Beyond Akumal, the PDC reef corridor extends south through Xpu-Ha (excellent coral gardens), Paamul (secluded beach, good snorkel), and the outer reef at Paraiso. A full-day charter covers all four with a beach lunch stop at a location no road reaches.
PDC does not offer ferry-level reef quality — if world-class coral walls are the goal, Cozumel is the answer. But for a day that combines wildlife, reef, and beach with zero transit friction, PDC is the right base.
Cozumel: The Reef Capital
Cozumel charters are priced lower than PDC because the reef is much closer to the marina. Puerto de Abrigo is 20–25 minutes from El Cielo and Palancar Reef — meaning on a 4-hour half-day charter, you spend most of the time in the water rather than in transit.
The Cozumel Marine Park protects the western reef system, which sits on the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 meters. Coral formations at Palancar rise 30 meters from the seafloor. El Cielo has hundreds of wild stingrays in 2–4 meters of water.
Note the Cozumel Marine Park fee: $10–$15/person (CONANP government tax) is collected at the dock before departure and is not includable by any operator. Budget it separately for every person in your group.
If staying in PDC or Tulum, the fastest route to Cozumel reefs is: take the 45-minute passenger ferry to Cozumel and charter from Puerto de Abrigo marina there, rather than attempting the 75–90 minute speedboat crossing from PDC.
Tulum: Cenote Coast and Seclusion
Tulum is the most remote of the main Riviera Maya departure points. The coastline south of Tulum has no road access — secluded white-sand beaches that can only be reached by boat. The cenote system extends beneath the coastline and in some locations flows into the sea, creating freshwater-saltwater mixing zones visible from the surface.
The reef off Tulum (Tulum Reef) is less dived than Cozumel or PDC’s main corridor, but offers good snorkeling and a level of solitude that the more popular northern sites can’t match. Departure point logistics require more advance planning — the Tulum marina area is less developed than PDC or Cozumel. See fleet options and pricing on our tulum yacht charter page.
Cancún: Isla Mujeres + Whale Sharks
Cancún charters offer access to Isla Mujeres (40–60 min from the Cancún marina), the Isla Contoy bird sanctuary, and — from June through September — whale shark encounters in open water north of Isla Holbox. Cancún also offers the lowest entry price on the Riviera Maya (from $1,100 half-day) while accessing similar reef quality to PDC.
Whale shark season (June–September) is the standout reason to base yourself in Cancún. The aggregation site is regulated by CONANP — group sizes, entry conditions, and interaction rules are strictly enforced. A dedicated whale shark charter departs before sunrise and the experience is unlike anything else in the region.
When to Charter: Seasons Explained

From $1,550 half-day from PDC or Tulum (up to 10 guests, captain + fuel included). Cozumel starts lower at $480 half-day because the reef is much closer. Cancún from $1,100. All prices are for the full vessel — not per person. Catamaran charters for up to 20 guests from $1,200.
November through April for best visibility and calmest seas. June–September for whale sharks (Cancún area). May and October are excellent shoulder months — fewer crowds, good conditions, easier last-minute availability. The Riviera Maya is chartereable year-round.
Yes — June through September, departing from Cancún or Isla Mujeres. The aggregation site is 2–3 hours offshore north of Isla Holbox and is regulated by CONANP. The experience is a snorkel swim alongside whale sharks (10–12 m) in open water. Not available from PDC, Tulum, or Cozumel — those bases are too far from the aggregation area.
Every Nauty 360 charter includes: licensed captain, fuel (no surcharges), snorkel gear for all guests, and a cooler for personal drinks. Food and alcohol are BYOB. The Cozumel Marine Park fee ($10–$15/person) is a government tax paid separately at the dock — no operator can include it.
Akumal Bay (wild sea turtles, 10–20 per session year-round), Xpu-Ha reef (coral gardens), Paamul Beach (secluded snorkel, no crowds), and the outer PDC reef at Paraiso for drift snorkeling. A full-day charter covers all four plus a beach lunch stop. Sea turtles at Akumal are the standout that PDC has and Cozumel cannot match reliably.
