5 Things Nobody Tells You About Boat Rentals in Tulum

Honest intel from 218+ charters in the Riviera Maya.

01 · Tulum has no marina

Every "Tulum boat rental" listing actually departs from somewhere else.

Puerto Aventuras Marina is 30–40 minutes north of Tulum. That's where all private yachts and catamarans depart. Some operators list "Tulum" as the destination but the boat never goes there — it cruises the coast nearby. We're transparent: departure is Puerto Aventuras, and we coordinate your transfer.

02 · Akumal sea turtles require a shore guide by law

You can't snorkel Akumal Bay without a certified guide — even from a private boat.

Mexican environmental regulations require all snorkelers in Akumal Bay to be accompanied by a certified guide to protect the sea turtles. We coordinate a local guide to join you in the water. This costs an additional ~$15 USD/person. Any operator who doesn't mention this is skipping the regulation — avoid them.

03 · The Tulum Ruins view from land is not the famous shot

The iconic cliff photo is taken from the sea. Land visitors only see the ruins from inside.

The photograph that made Tulum Ruins famous worldwide — temple on a 12-meter cliff above turquoise water — is taken from a boat 200 meters offshore. From the ruins site itself, you look inland and see jungle. The sea view is only accessible by boat.

04 · Sian Ka'an is a different trip — not a boat, an eco-tour

Sian Ka'an Biosphere is a lagoon tour in flat-bottom boats, not a yacht charter.

Sian Ka'an departs from Muyil or Punta Allen (south of Tulum) in small eco-boats — flat-bottomed lanchas navigating mangrove channels and lagoons. It's a UNESCO experience, not a yacht charter. A private yacht can't access these shallow channels. We recommend it as a separate day — we don't combine it with a yacht charter.

05 · Playa Paraíso from the beach is overcrowded — from the water, it's empty

The beach clubs now charge $50–100/person minimum spend. The water off the coast is free.

Tulum's beach clubs have become notoriously expensive. Anchoring offshore and swimming in from the boat gives you the same turquoise water and powdery sand — without the cover charge, the drone music, or the crowds. At 10:30 AM on a weekday, you'll have 200 meters of coastline to yourselves.

This Isn't the Right Trip If...

You're a solo traveler or couple with a $300 total budget. Private boat + transport from Tulum starts around $1,250. For 2 people, that's $625/person. Shared tours at $130/person cover similar spots — use the savings for a cenote day.

Your main goal is the cenotes (Dos Ojos, El Gran, Calavera). Cenotes are inland — no boat gets you there. Rent a car ($30/day) or book a cenote tour van. Boats and cenotes are separate experiences in Tulum.

You want the Sian Ka'an lagoon experience. Sian Ka'an requires a flat-bottomed eco-boat through mangrove channels — not accessible by yacht. Book a dedicated Sian Ka'an tour from Muyil separately.

You need Cozumel reefs. Cozumel is 80+ km south and offshore — a yacht charter from Puerto Aventuras can't do it as a day trip. Fly or take the Playa del Carmen ferry instead.

Yes — Akumal Bay (20 minutes north of Tulum, en route from Puerto Aventuras) has year-round sea turtle populations feeding on seagrass beds at 1–3 meters depth. Mexican environmental law requires a certified guide to accompany snorkelers inside the bay (~$15 USD/person, coordinated by us). Spotted eagle rays and green moray eels are also common here.
